Garth Nix has two brilliant prologues in his YA trilogy. The first book "Sabriel" has one that is necessary because it makes us love Sabriel's Dad, who is off-screen most of the way through, but is also the emotional core of the book. The one in the third book, "Abhorsen" has a similar function - except most readers already know the characters of that prologue, and so they utterly panic before they even start reading chapter one.
